Hormone Replacement Therapy

Testosterone

·       Primary male androgen responsible for the development and maintenance male sexual characteristics, reproductive function, muscle mass, bone density, erythropoiesis, and aspects of mood and cognition.

·       Testosterone binds to androgen receptors throughout the body

Effects

·       Development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics

·       Increased protein synthesis

Side Effects

·       Common: Injection site reaction, acne, increased hair growth, male pattern hair loss in susceptible individuals, testicular atrophy, reduced sperm production, reduced testicular volume

·    Uncommon: Malignancy growth, gynecomastia, fluid retention, breast tenderness, increased H&H, infertility, changes in mood, enlarged prostate, DVT, PE, MI

·       Contraindications: Active Malignancy, breast feeding or pregnant, men actively planning fertility, elevated hematocrit, untreated/severe OSA, uncontrolled HF, recent MI/CVA(3-6 months), History of unprovoked DVT

Dosing

• Injection: 100-200 mg Intramuscularly/week. Divided into doses.

• Topical Cream: 50-100 mg applied to the skin daily
